"A socially embedded frugality is the norm now. People are scrutinizing every purchase and spending money on things they need, not things they want. It's an entirely different landscape than we were in 12 months ago," David Perry, senior vice president of the Aspen Skiing Co., told The Industry Report.

Economic Outlook: Cloudy, But Periods Of Sunshine

Economic forces affect the mountain sports industry almost as much as the weather. The world economy is showing some signs of recovering from what has been a tsunami of a recession. The weather? That's another story.

The Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies should look for above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation.

The Wildcard: Will Swine Flu Keep Families Home?

The wrinkle in the season may be H1N1, or the so-called Swine Flu. How soon it plays out, how widespread it gets or, perhaps, the timing of its peak, will determine if it becomes the joker in our season's deck. A peak of this easily transmitted flu among school-age population the last two weeks in December, for example, could send the global mountain resort industry to the ER.

Innsbruck: Selling A Safari In A City That Sells Itself

The city of Innsbruck, "Capital of the Alps," is a tour operator's dream. It is at once a ski resort with Olympic credentials, a charming city break and cultural destination, a world-class conferencing venue, and a paradise for hikers, bikers, and climbers. In fact, aside from a beach, the city has it all.

All this combined makes for a unique destination that effortlessly blends a working city dripping with history, heritage, and winter sports.

"Innsbruck is probably the only place where skiers and snowboarders will walk side by side with business people in the morning and neither will receive a strange look," International Marketing Manager Nicholas Boekdrukker from Innsbruck Tourism told The Industry Report.

The Good Old Summer Time That Wasn't; But, Was It Habit Forming?

Summer business at resorts across America was flat at best at places close to large population centers. It was badly down where one might expect, that is at remote locations that take time and money to reach.

The result was a reported average drop in July bookings of 13 percent, and drop in July revenues of 11 percent, compared with a year ago, with the impact falling unevenly across the spectrum of destinations.

Looming out there is the big question of what will winter bring, and what strategy will yield economic success?

Slovakia. It's not likely on top of most people's list of "must ski" destinations, but the European republic is the only new country to make it into the brochures of Britain's leading tour operators this winter. Slovakia is the eastern half of what was Czechoslovakia, famous for its Prague Spring under the old Soviet regime in the 1960s.

Essay: The Lure Of The Mountains

What is it about mountains that lures people back, summer and winter, year after year? Maybe it's that modern life involves few challenges and much complexity. Forays into the mountains reduce life to a simpler level, and give us a chance to test ourselves against an unyielding standard.
