Summer Shorts: You're Building What? Where?

By Craig Altschul
July 27, 2009

The grapevine is always ripe with rumors this time of year. But, the story coming out of Grapevine, Texas - a fast growing community a wing's length away from mammoth DFW Airport - has the community welcoming a ski resort in July 2011. The mayor is so excited he said Grapevine visitors and residents soon will be able to "experience the heat of the equator and the cold of the North Pole." This fellow should seek higher office.

CBS11 television news reported last week The Texas Alps will be part of a mixed-use $1.6 billion development to include entertainment, retail, residential, and office space, with the ski park as its centerpiece. Snow Sports Entertainment Limited, the developers, say they plan to break ground within six months.

By the way, the long-ballyhooed indoor ski center ready to open in New Jersey, known perhaps appropriately as Xanadu (meaning; "unattainably beautiful") has yet to open and apparently won't this year. These indoor snow pleasure palaces have had a UK, and even, Dubai, boothold for quite a while.

Texans love to ski. One of Mountain News' largest ski reporting radio networks is in Texas. However - we hope this new "Texan Alps" much success but no way are we going to include them in the daily ski reports. Fun piece Industry Report.
