Summer Shorts: By George, He's At It Again

By Craig Altschul
July 13, 2009

A deal is in the works for George Gillett - he of Vail and, later, Booth Creek fame - to sell his Montreal Canadiens National Hockey League team and the Bell Center where it plays - for more than $500 million, according to a recent front page story in Sports Business Journal. He reportedly paid $232 million to acquire the icon properties in 2001.

Gillett, an American, also owns Richard Petty Motorsports NASCAR team, and is a co-owner of Liverpool, F.C., a football club (aka: soccer team) in the English Premier League. The Journal suggests that "debts from his sports ventures has him open to offers" for the Canadiens and "the sale would be a huge victory for Gillett." Hmmm. George seldom strays far from ice and snow, and Stowe is in the neighborhood and most definitely for sale.

Stowe could do a lot worse than having Sir George at the helm.
