Tough Times Affect Everything: Even The Ski Team In An Olympic Year

Tough times mean tough love. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association finds itself, like just about every other organization these days, dealing with both of those issues.

"I think they're going to get through 2010 OK, but where the team is really going to feel it is further down the road, for the next Olympic Games," Pam Fletcher, a charismatic retired member of the U.S. Ski Team, an Olympian, and now an executive at Nashoba Valley in Mass., a family-held ski area, told The Industry Report. ...continue reading »

The Last Of The Big Spenders? CNL Goal To 'Extend The Useful Life'

Perhaps the big spenders are gone now. The days - not long ago - when new high speed lifts, gondolas, chondolas, trails, bowls, base lodges, hotels, and condos were the grist for pre-season stories by ski and travel writers, may have disappeared for what could be quite a hiatus.

This summer's version isn't very sexy. In fact, CNL Lifestyle Properties and their tenant resorts "are not immune to economic conditions and are investing capital dollars conservatively this summer," CNL Vice President and Managing Director Steve Rice told The Industry Report. ...continue reading »

Summer Shorts: You're Building What? Where?

The grapevine is always ripe with rumors this time of year. But, the story coming out of Grapevine, Texas - a fast growing community a wing's length away from mammoth DFW Airport - has the community welcoming a ski resort in July 2011. The mayor is so excited he said Grapevine visitors and residents soon will be able to "experience the heat of the equator and the cold of the North Pole." This fellow should seek higher office. ...continue reading »

Summer Booking Trends Mirrors Winter In The Alps

People are booking late, but then they're booking at a higher rate. That is the message floating out from the European Alps this summer. It mirrors a trend that first was reported right after Christmas when tour operators were inundated with a rush of skiers and riders wanting to book trips departing within days, rather than the norm for decades past, of long-term advance planning. ...continue reading »

If It Takes A Village - Killington May Get One Yet

The gone, but-not-forgotten, American Skiing Company bet the farm on developing Killington real estate, and ended up losing it. Perhaps ASC based those expansion decisions on the best possible projections of continued growth in the real estate market at the time. As our kids say, "Whatever." ...continue reading »

Summer Shorts: By George, He's At It Again

A deal is in the works for George Gillett - he of Vail and, later, Booth Creek fame - to sell his Montreal Canadiens National Hockey League team and the Bell Center where it plays - for more than $500 million, according to a recent front page story in Sports Business Journal. He reportedly paid $232 million to acquire the icon properties in 2001.

Gillett, an American, also owns Richard Petty Motorsports NASCAR team, and is a co-owner of Liverpool, F.C., a football club (aka: soccer team) in the English Premier League. The Journal suggests that "debts from his sports ventures has him open to offers" for the Canadiens and "the sale would be a huge victory for Gillett." Hmmm. George seldom strays far from ice and snow, and Stowe is in the neighborhood and most definitely for sale. ...continue reading »
