Elvis Is Leaving The Building; SIA Bids Vegas Adieu This Week

By Craig Altschul
January 26, 2009

What happens in Vegas this week won't stay there. The 20,000 people who will potentially roll through the Mandalay Bay Resort Tuesday to Friday at the Snowsports Industries America (SIA) Trade Show will write orders and party hearty for the 37th and final time in the desert. The huge event moves, some say most appropriately, to the recently built Colorado Convention Center in Denver in 2010.

"The SIA board considered many locations for relocating the show and Denver met the needs of our Association and the snowsports industry perfectly - we're looking forward to the move in 2010," SIA Chairman Mike Carey said at the time of the 2007 announcement of the impending move. "We are looking forward to living our snow passion in Denver." Denver officials said the SIA show was the largest convention booking to date in the city's history.

Aside from the obvious - skiing and snowboarding aren't desert sports - the Colorado Convention Center will offer a gigantic footprint for expansion of exhibits, exhibitors, and spectators. That was a key consideration in the move. Then, there's the easy access for participants to plenty of Rocky Mountain ski resorts before, during, and after the show.

SIA, which itself was established in 1954, annually produces the SIA SnowSports Trade Show, the largest snow sports industry trade show and networking environment, while delivering data/research, support, marketing products, services, and programs to its members. The show features 1,000 brands and 400 exhibitors.

Industry watchers, of course, are wondering about the effect of a tanked economy on retail orders, and perhaps on show attendance, as well. The IR's sister consumer Web site, OnTheSnow.com, the most visited snowsports Web site in the world, will carry reports daily from the show by Associate Editor Jill Adler.
