Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, LLC, owned by Brian and Tyler Fairbank and Joseph O'Donnell, will continue to operate the resort under a 40-year lease with CNL.

"Brian was looking for long-term stability, particularly in this current economic climate," CNL Lifestyle Properties Vice President and Managing Director Steve Rice told The Industry Report. ...continue reading »

XC's Future: 'It's Not The Snow, It's How It's Marketed,' Says Wiesel

Nobody seems too sure whether cross-country skiing is the General Motors or the Toyota of the winter sports industry or somewhere in-between. But, Jonathan Wiesel, co-founder and principal of Nordic Group International, says the future success of the sport depends on the industry's marketing savvy.

"I'd bet we'll see major growth again soon," Wiesel told The Industry Report in an exclusive, in-depth interview from his home in Colorado. "I think the real caveat isn't snow, because great trails only need six compacted inches for skiing, but instead, how smart we can be at marketing a really good, diverse product."

Who does Wiesel think ought to be the targeting of this marketing effort? "If we're going to grow, the Nordic business has to cultivate women's markets. They're the primary decision makers for vacations and very often for equipment purchases. ...continue reading »

Rescues In The Backcountry: A Fine Line On Who Gets The Bill

Ski resort operators and rescue professionals understand the adventurous lure of testing one's abilities against challenging terrain. They also see need for personal responsibility and awareness of the trouble that may arise when people go into the backcountry unprepared. Therein lies the tug-of-war and a very fine line.

That "adventurous lure" is a big reason why people ski. But, the flip side has become a growing concern for resort and rescue officials.

Skiers and snowboarders love the freedom of skiing on steep or gladed backcountry terrain, but rescue operations to get them out of trouble can be time-consuming and expensive. ...continue reading »

Elvis Is Leaving The Building; SIA Bids Vegas Adieu This Week

What happens in Vegas this week won't stay there. The 20,000 people who will potentially roll through the Mandalay Bay Resort Tuesday to Friday at the Snowsports Industries America (SIA) Trade Show will write orders and party hearty for the 37th and final time in the desert. The huge event moves, some say most appropriately, to the recently built Colorado Convention Center in Denver in 2010. ...continue reading »

Optimism Mixes With Sustainability Efforts As Northeast Operators Meet In Vermont

Mount Snow, Vt. – Hanging over the annual gathering of ski area operators from across the Northeast at the NSAA Winter Conference and Trade Snow held at Mount Snow yesterday and today (Jan. 13-14) was a certain sense of surprised satisfaction that the winter was going well despite early season forebodings sparked by a bad economy. The Industry Report was there to report for you.

That relief coincided with an over-riding theme building on NSAA's sustainability programs during this economic downtown.

One example of that optimism came from Tom Meyers, veteran marketer with Wachusett Mountain, who said, "We're seeing a strong season. We lost five days to a power outage in mid-December, but night racing and ski school programs are in full swing. We're seeing full parking lots mid-week, which shows a lot of enthusiasm out there despite a tough economy." ...continue reading »

Brushing Off Bad News? Skiers, Riders Are A Resilient Lot

Fatal avalanches have hit resorts in various parts of North America, and one resort had a major gondola accident, which injured some but fortunately killed none, a ski area general manager was shot to death, and New Year's Eve was blown away by bomb threats in Aspen. All of this led us to wonder how skiers and riders react to frightening and, sometimes deadly, events on the slopes.

The response from several industry sources leads to the conclusion that skiers and riders are a forward-looking bunch, more concerned with the quality of snow than yesterday's headlines. ...continue reading »

iPhone Snow App Already A Winner: 'It's A Game Changer'

The question may be what can't you do with your iPhone and others using 3G (Third Generation) technology?

"We were the first to come out with an iPhone application for skiers to be able to receive snow reports, news, and information and we quickly discovered that this is a game changer," Mountain News Corp. Managing Director Chad Dyer told The Industry Report.

Dyer said the response has been surprisingly gratifying with more than 53,000 iPhone visits coming directly to the OnTheSnow.com Web site for more information in December after using the application. He said the app, which became available in late October, has been downloaded from the iPhone Apps Store 25,300 times at $1.99 each. ...continue reading »

Say Boo - Index Reports 78 Percent Of Us Web Before Traveling

Boo.com, a relatively new "tell us us what you thought of the place" travel Web site, released its second annual Travel Trust Index Report last month. It looks like the Web has become "trustworthy." That, alone, is a good sign.

The Travel Trust Index Report looks at the booking behaviors and preference of Americans and focuses on the trust levels for the many options available.

The key findings: 78 percent use the Web to make travel decisions; 68 percent trust the Web for travel-related advice; only 5 percent say travel agencies are their must trusted source for information. ...continue reading »

Avalanche Destroys Snoqualmie Lift; Cascade Ski Areas Close

A Pineapple Express roared into Washington State Tuesday (1/6), shooting the freezing level up to peak tops, dropping heavy rains, and battering resorts with high winds. Mountain passes closed due to flooding, washouts, mudslides, avalanches, and extreme potential for even more avalanches. Ski areas were closed, and one suffered damage from a slide.

Most of the Cascades received 24-50 inches of snow in January's first few days. But freezing levels on Monday skyrocketed, ushering in heavy rains and strong winds. A foot of rain pelted mountain passes and ski resorts - water that seeped through snow layers, significantly increasing the avalanche danger by Wednesday.

"Rain adds weight to the snow, but no strength," Mark Moore, Director of the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center, told The Industry Report. "It just loaded a fragile snow pack." ...continue reading »
