'It's The Economy, Stupid' - OnTheSnow Traffic Zooms With Value Seekers
By Craig Altschul December 01, 2008
Wal-Mart and its ilk appear to be headed for a Merry Christmas season. The same might be said for mountain resorts and lodging offering meaningful value deals. Time will tell.
OnTheSnow.com (published by Mountain News Corp., which also publishes the IR) has zoomed 30 percent in unique visits over last year, while page views are up 45 percent. Last season set a record of 1.3 million audited unique visitors per month.
"The reason is very clear when we analyze the statistics," said Chad Dyer, Mountain News managing director. "They are coming to our site seeking what they perceive to be hot deals for skiing, snowboarding, and lodging. Consumers are keeping a tight hold on their wallets, but they can afford to be picky because we have so many offers posted."
OnTheSnow's regional editors, based around the world, post more than 60 stories each week featuring news from resorts and lodging properties. Many more stories this season than ever before seem to focus on innovative package lures and promotional deals.
The Web site's new Lift Ticket Deals Guide, where visitors pick a state or region and find promotions on lift passes, has seen high volume, as have snow reports because of so many early openings.
What It Means: We're not above receiving a bit of good news, but the implications of this early interest go way beyond that. Wal-Mart may have a good season; so might the ski industry, as long as potential guests respond to strong, unusual promotional offers at affordable price points. That, and snow.
