Red Lodge Residents Flee From Fire; No Structures Damaged So Far

By Craig Altschul
July 31, 2008

Red Lodge Resort, and more than 90 nearby homes in the Beartooth Mountains of Montana, have been evacuated by fire officials.

The Industry Report has received an early evening update on Thursday (July 31) noting a red flag warning has been issued for the entire Cascade Fire area for high winds associated with a cold front passing through the area. The Structure Protection Group at Red Lodge has been placed on alert.

The fire has been reported to be within two miles of the 48-year-old ski area. The cold front is expected to cause the winds to shift back to the northwest Thursday evening after the front rolls through, causing the fire to burn back on itself.

A notice on the resort's Web site Thursday afternoon said fire officials remain "confident (at this time) they will be able to protect the ski area from harm." Web cams on the mountain were not functioning. The resort offices have been temporarily relocated to the golf clubhouse. Resort officials can be reached during business hours at (406) 446-3344.

OnTheSnow.com's Becky Lomax said the winds through the high passes of Glacier Park in the northwest corner of the state yesterday were "helacious" at 80 mph and certainly have kicked the Cascade fire up, even as far south as Red Lodge.
