Hitwise Ranks OnTheSnow.com Tops Again By Wide Margins
By Craig Altschul February 18, 2008
There may be contests remaining for presidential candidates, but the "election's" all but over for the season when it comes to skier and snowboarder choices among 11 snowsports Web sites.
OnTheSnow.com, the world's oldest and largest snowsports site, owned and published by Mountain News Corp. (which also publishes the IR), continues its domination of the genre, taking the top spot in the January, 2008 Hitwise Competitive Intelligence Report once again.
The dominance was so solid that OnTheSnow.com held 49.63 percent of the market share with its closest competitor ranked at 8.21 percent.
"The significance of the Hitwise rankings is obvious to anyone making advertising decisions and means an advertiser would literally have to buy almost all the other sites to approach the reach of one OnTheSnow.com buy," said Mountain News President and Publisher Rob Brown. Hitwise Competitive Intelligence monitors 25 million home, work, and educational users worldwide every day.
Brown added that MNC is the only ski industry Web site that is audited by Nielsen. The latest Nielsen numbers show 1,140,463 unique users (browsers) coming to OnTheSnow monthly. That breaks out to 1,481,168 audited user sessions totaling 5,558,217 page impressions. Users are averaging 3.5 pages per session.
Editor's Note: Some readers may say including this story in the IR is self-serving. We would agree. But, our professional news judgment is such that, since the Internet has become perhaps the most important quill in the mountain resort marketing quiver, these rankings are worthy of our coverage, and would be so, regardless of which company sat atop the mountain.
