Rumor Central: Intrawest's Eastern Resorts Not On Block, Company Refocuses Strategy

By Craig Altschul
December 14, 2007

Intrawest's Whistler Blackcomb

"It's about the resorts, and the resort 'brands,' not Intrawest. This means each resort is led and managed by the resort chiefs. There is no 'uber' company involved." He added that the money is available for investing in the mountain products. (Fortress is a 10-year-old company with assets reportedly of more than $23 billion.)

"It's about the mountains and the resorts, and less about Intrawest. It's about the reorganization and realignment, and how we will work with the resorts in the marketplace. The real estate is being realigned under the resort chiefs," he said.

But, if you want to keep the rumor mill afloat (and who doesn't in our little mountain world?) go figure this one:

"Andy told me that Intrawest is strategically in the acquisitions mode," Luthy said. "He said there are a half dozen resorts the company would consider acquiring should they become available. He didn't name them. He said staff is constantly reviewing and discussing what might be available in the marketplace."
