An IR Exclusive: Mountain High Has A Big New Lease On Life

Mountain High, arguably Southern California's most exciting ski resort, has been sold to CNL Income Properties, Inc., the Orlando, Florida-based real estate investment trust company (R.E.I.T.) that is making more than a modest splash in the mountain resort industry (see IR 6/4/07). The Industry Report confirmed the $45 million dollar sale with both CNL and Mountain High sources late yesterday. You are reading it here first. ...continue reading »

The Doctor Will See You Now - Bob Fries, 'M.D.' Set To Operate Again

Bob Fries just laughed when The Industry Report pointed out that he has become a very effective doctor to not-so-healthy ski resorts as his career progressed. But, this M.D. (Mountain Doctor) has indeed set several patients on the road to recovery.

Fries is on the job this summer at his latest rehabilitation project, Ragged Mountain, N.H., a struggling 47-year-old family-oriented "resort" about 90 minutes from Boston.

"Ragged Mountain offers a good opportunity for development into a productive resort," Fries said, "largely because it is completely unspoiled. It's a beautiful, scenic area, but there are virtually no condominiums, lodges, or anything else to get in the way of starting fresh." ...continue reading »

Too Early To Predict Visitor Fallout From Fire

One local newspaper reporter used the analogy of "fire and ice" to blame for the media-fueled perception that Lake Tahoe's entire tourist destination was uninhabitable. The dryer than usual winter, combined with a devastating 3,100-acre Angola wildfire that consumed some 250 homes in late June, had the region nervous as the midweek 4th of July holiday start to the summer season arrived.

It is too early to assess the fallout, but the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported that lodging reservations were down 10 percent just a few days before the midweek holiday. The drop could be fire-related, calendar-related, or both. The resort region normally draws more than 100,000 visitors on a "normal" Fourth. Occupancy rates stood at 75 to 80 percent at South Shore establishments, the newspaper reported.

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority was scrambling to get the word out that the devastation was centered in one area occupied primarily by permanent residents. But the "Open for Business" sign will probably need to hang out a while. ...continue reading »

Big Apple To Steamboat: Flying Direct On Saturdays

Steamboat resort will be taking a bigger bite out of the Big Apple. The New York market growth is part of a continuing flight pattern into Steamboat/HDN Airport (22 miles from the resort) from 10 cities.

Saturday flights via 757 aircraft have been added from JFK Airport on Delta Airlines, while that airline's flights from La Guardia Airport have increased from just six Saturdays last year to service for the entire season.

Passengers are in for a surprise when they "debark" and discover a spacious new $18 million terminal (it opened in February this year). ...continue reading »
