Payback Time At Cochran

Cochrans
By Craig Altschul

Here's a unique twist on the ski area improvement story. The venerable Cochran Ski Area in Richmond, Vt. has embarked on a $400,000 fund raising drive. The plan is to install snowmaking for the 2007/08 season.

The Cochran family, many readers will recall, included four siblings who were members of the U.S. Ski Team and a dad who was a Ski Team coach. Barbara Ann Cochran won the Olympic gold medal in slalom in 1972.

The tiny ski area that could started when Mickey Cochran strung a rope tow up the hill in 1961. The rest is history for hundreds of families in the area.

The hope is that families will step up and help fund the snowmaking. After all, 500 kids from four area schools were enrolled in the Cochran after-school program this season, paying just $35 for eight weeks of lessons. A family season pass was $300.

It's payback time.
