OnTheSnow.com, a consumer Web site published by Mountain News Corp.,(publishers of Industry Report) surged past a dramatic industry milestone as its IPRO certified third party audit recorded 1.1 million unique visitors during January 2007.

No media property in the snow sports industry has ever exceeded an audited unique audience in excess of one million skiers, says Marc Corsi, President and CEO of Corsi Partners, a San Francisco-based advertising and media buying firm with 20 years experience counseling ski resorts and tourism bureaus.

The audit, compiled and certified by media auditors IPRO Corp., is supported by market share data released last week by Hitwise Competitive Intelligence, an online measurement company based in New York. Hitwise found that OnTheSnow.com continues to be the #1 visited snow sports portal with 34.61 percent market share in January 2007. The next closest snow sports portal had market share of 10.45 percent.

"Audience within OnTheSnow.com was up 34 percent year over year," said Rob Brown, President and Publisher of Mountain News Corporation. "This is an unprecedented surge in visitation, especially so in light of the variable snow conditions we've had in 2007."

The company credited the dramatic upswing in visitation (from 840,000 unique visitors recording during the same time last year) to a number of factors, including: enhanced media partnerships, a wildly successful user review component, expanded travel and news coverage, and a robust new blogging format.

"We have focused on providing our audience the ability to contribute to the site, and they do, every day. This has broadened the OnTheSnow.com community and turned it into a worldwide network of likeminded enthusiasts who gain from their relationship with us and with each other," Brown said.

Visitors who use OnTheSnow.com to help plan their winter vacation need only scan the site's Reviews section for independently generated reports on resorts, restaurants, and lodging options - all submitted by people just like themselves. Skiers who rely on the site for the latest in snow conditions and ski travel planning routinely submit photos of their ski trips for others to enjoy, a practice which has served to broaden the OTS Community and helped give it worldwide user appeal.
