Forget The Weather - Snow Biz Gambling On Hot SIA Vegas Show

You probably don't need to know the weather report to know that the hottest place in the ski world to be today is in Las Vegas at SIA '07, the huge snowsports trade show. Besides, if you're in the east, you don't want to know the weather report.

Last night's all-out Volvo-sponsored winter fashion show at the Fashion Show Mall was another mind-blower with laserlit style combined with a giant cocktail party and music by Andy Caldwell, the so-called signature artist of rock/electronic/house music.

But, it all begins today (Jan. 22, 2007) where longtime SIA President/CEO David Ingemie told The Industry Report that despite any regional weather issues, upwards of 18,000 retail buyers, sales representatives, industry professionals, company managers, winter sports athletes, and media will pour over the complete product lines from 900 brands of ski and snowboard equipment and fashions.

"We don't expect the weather to have much affect, if any, on attendance," Ingemie said, "but it most likely will affect buying patterns, particularly from eastern shops. Those buyers will react differently and, when there is a season like this one, will usually be reactive, rather than proactive in their purchases for next winter. They'll order light."

SIA isn't reacting to the weather - hey, who knew? But, it is certainly reacting in a proactive manner by stepping up to the plate and encouraging green environmental practice.

"We realize the importance of the environment on a weather-dependent industry like ours," he said. The organization has recently established a working group to make solid recommendations to the industry on how it can "green up" packaging, recycling, waste management, transportation, natural resource preservation, and other issues.

"We've been working with the staff at Mandalay Bay Convention Center to provide an on-site recycling program for containers for plastic, glass, metal, and more," he said. "We've also purchased renewable energy certificates to cover 100 percent of the electric power we will consume at this year's show."

For anyone counting, that's 225,000kWH. The purchase will prevent 313,200 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. Representatives from the Boulder, Colo. firm of Renewable Choice Energy will be at the show with the SIA Resource Center to educate buyers and exhibitors. Those purchasing renewable certificates at the show - individuals or companies - will be highlighted on a "Wall of Signatures."

Trends, sure. A revolution? No. "I think 2007 is more of an evolutionary year for the industry. Sure, plaids are hot in fashion, while twin tips are the hardware hot item, but no revolution this time out."

But, there's a heck of a backyard to play in. Look for a new two-story structure on the floor called "The Yard." It solves the problem of the growing demand for space at the show (it's a sell-out...there isn't any more) by showcasing 30 brands associated with snowboarding and action sports.

Lots of buying. Lots of partying. Lots of gambling. Lots of, well, everything. If you are not there, just go ahead and worry about the weather.
