Intrawest Founder Houssian Retires, Wasilov Steps Up
By J.D. O'Connor November 02, 2006
Compiled from staff and wire reports
Intrawest founder and chief executive officer Joe Houssian announced today he will retire after 30 years with the company. Alex Wasilov, president and chief operating officer, will assume Houssian's role at the Vancouver-based firm.
"I have a tremendous amount of pride in the company we have built over the last 30 years," Houssian said. "With the successful conclusion of the Fortress transaction, Intrawest is poised for a new era of growth and expansion."
Wasilov, who joined Intrawest two years ago, "has proven to be an exceptional leader and the perfect executive to lead Intrawest forward into this next phase of development," according to Houssian.
Wasilov acknowledged the move as a "unique opportunity to assume the leadership position at a company with leading market share and tremendous momentum."
Wasilov first joined Intrawest in 2005 as a member of the Board of Directors, and in April 2006, he was appointed to his current position as president and chief operating officer. Prior to joining Intrawest, Wasilov worked for Eastman Kodak and Xerox Corporation.
Intrawest has interests in 10 resorts at North America's most popular mountain destinations, including Whistler Blackcomb, a host venue for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. It owns Canadian Mountain Holidays, the largest heli-skiing operation in the world, and an interest in Abercrombie & Kent, the world leader in luxury adventure travel.

I sure hope Intrawest fairs better than either old school Kodak or god forbid Xerox (are either still around?)
Sad times for all of us that love Whistler. |

As a lifelong skier it is clear resorts need alternative activities to more fully utilize there facilities and attract revenue without simply selling off real estate. I hope the new owners will have the vision to expand entertainment opportunities at their mountains so as to attract a broader customer base. Ideas include installing year round performance sledding venues, for example! |
