Those lazy, hazy days of, er, January, are gradually filling up. With skiers and snowboarders. The early weeks of each new year have brought holiday hangovers to resorts trying to meet projected visitor numbers for decades. The weather is either at its coldest or - more often in the Northeast - finds a way to thaw out for a week or more. The Martin Luther King holiday has helped considerably if the weather cooperates.

Seldom does a movie come along that so clearly defines a sport. For surfing fans it was "Endless Summer," which sent gremlins and hodads alike into the surfshops for appropriate attire and spawned a new dialect - "surf speak." What "Summer" did for surfing, "Hot Dog, The Movie" did for skiing.

Name your curse: declining ticket sales, receding snow levels, intrusive governmental bureaucracies - they're all bad. Any one of them can sink a ski area. Together, they'll drag you down faster than river water in your hip waders.

You kids today. Why, back when compact discs were something you got after one couloir jump too many, we didn't need any help locating and - ahem - consumating our relationships with the opposite sex. But one ski area is catering to couples in search of the perfect time - and place - to mate.

Fed up with the modern vacation amounting to a long weekend or even two weeks a year? OK, take a week in Colorado for Christmas. Then, let's take the whole family to Kitzbuhel for our President's Week. Maybe we close out the season with some spring snow at Mammoth or heli-skiing in the Bugaboos. Sounds good to me. How about you?

Intrawest founder and chief executive officer Joe Houssian announced today he will retire after 30 years with the company. Alex Wasilov, president and chief operating officer, will assume Houssian's role at the Vancouver-based firm.
