Frank Snyder, the colorful co-founder of Stratton Mountain, equally visible throughout Vermont and Connecticut, died late last month at his summer home on Martha's Vineyard.

He was 84.

Frank was an avid sportsman. He's best known among Vermonters for his important role in founding Stratton Mountain in 1961. Moore & Munger, founded by his father, owned Stratton for many years (M&M invented wax paper).

Frank served as Stratton's president, and subsequently chairman, until he retired in 1984. It was his vision that led Stratton to become one of the first major family-oriented ski resorts in the nation. The resort is owned by Intrawest Corp. today. Frank was also Chairman of the National Ski Areas Association.

He sailed and raced throughout the Northeast and Europe, and once sailed from New York, through the Panama Canal, and across the Pacific to New Zealand. He has been Commodore of the New York Yacht Club, Board Chair of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and a board member of the Mystic Seaport.

FRANK SNYDER, you have left us too soon. We still need you gentleman's diplomatic and insightful touch to ski industry interpersonal problems. Your support of "heavenly things" such as snow , water, and wind-- as ski area developer and blue water sailor and competitor was always an inspiration to me. May your new situation let you carry on"full and by" forever. Many of us, in the ski press and elsewhere, surely will miss your calming, but sometimes, challenging presence, here on the seas and on the ski slopes. Pax vobiscum, doug pfeiffer
