Perkins Miller Leaves Intrawest For NBC Sports
By J.D. O'Connor June 09, 2006
Perkins Miller, former vice-president of marketing and sales at Intrawest Colorado - operators of Copper Mountain and Winter Park resorts - resigned this week to take a job as Senior Vice-President, Digital Media, at NBC Sports and NBC Olympics, a Copper Mountain spokesman confirmed Friday.
Copper spokesman Carlos Garcia said Miller, hired by Intrawest in April of last year, had already left the company. "It all happened very recently, within the last week," he said.
Perkins has had a long association with both the Olympics and with NBC, having worked closely with the network in both Salt Lake in 2002 and Sydney, Australia in 2000.
"It was a good opportunity for him," Garcia said.
Neither NBC or Miller could be reached for comment on the move Friday, a move which left some ski industry insiders wondering what it would mean to have one of "their own" on the inside of a major television network.
"For anybody in the ski industry to land a high level job with NBC should be good for us," said Jack Turner, creator of Snow Monsters and the Next Snow Search, which fared well when aired on NBC this year. "I would say that with the fact that Perkins has worked in the ski media and knows a lot of people across the country it could be something really good for the ski industry. Maybe there's life beyond working at your local ski resort after all."
Miller joined Intrawest on April 11, 2005 and was given responsibility for enhancing conference and leisure sales, business development, call center operations, corporate partnerships, strategic alliances, advertising, public relations and Internet for both Copper and Winter Park.
Prior to joining Intrawest, Miller was vice president and managing director for Mountain Sports Media, where he was responsible for overseeing all business affairs for SKI and Skiing Magazine and Warren Miller Films as well as the company's New Media opportunities.

We are delighted that someone "senior" from the mountain resort side may be in a position to influence national broadcast media from several different perspectives. We need to continue to sell the sizzle and fun of snow sports instead of writing checks and giving away lift tickets and lodging packages in return for media coverage - namely snow reports! All this does is cost ski areas more money for coverage they were getting free. Good luck Mr. Miller. Let us know how we can help you. |
