Slopeside Slots at Seven Springs

By J.D. O'Connor
May 01, 2006

Slots
Lake Tahoe it's not but Scott Bender, president and Chief Operating Officer at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Champion, Penn., is betting that a gaming hall will increase resort visitation and provide additional jobs in an area sorely in need of them.

Bender's proposed $5.4 million project will bear little resemblance to its flashy desert counterparts, he says.

"It will blend with our traditional stone-and-wood design. Our guests will not see something flashy and filled with neon. We don't want this to be like Las Vegas."

So far, plans and licensing for the 26,900-square-foot casino are on track and no significant opposition has been raised. Supporters predict it will create 350 new jobs and provide a much-needed boost for the local tax base.

Bender said the resort is looking forward to the additional revenue that 500 slot machines would generate if its license application is approved by the state gaming board.

"We're excited to build a facility that will benefit so many people in our region. Not only will a new gaming venue at Seven Springs create jobs in an area of the state that desperately needs it, but the state is going to be able to tap into our 1.2 million annual visitors immediately to help create property-tax relief for Pennsylvania homeowners," he said.

Bender said gambling traffic will generate more visitors for the resort, rather than just skiers in the winter and golfers in the summer.
