Ski-Rage Daddy Gets Anger Management Classes
By J.D. O'Connor April 20, 2006
A 52-year-old Douglas County man who repeatedly slugged a teenage girl after she rode over his daughter's skis with her snowboard has been ordered to attend anger management classes and pay a $100 fine in connection with a Jan. 29 assault at Steamboat Springs.
Routt County Judge James H. Garrecht also ordered Randell Berg to perform 48 hours of public service and placed him on one year of supervised probation. Berg pleaded guilty last month to misdemeanor third-degree assault. As part of his plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed another count of disorderly conduct pending from the Steamboat incident. He has no other criminal history.
Berg's attorney had argued that his client - a new father - reacted out of anger and was merely trying to protect his daughter when she was knocked down by the boarder near the bottom of Headwall. Witnesses said Berg slugged the helmeted boarder several times as she bent down to inspect the fallen 8 year old - who was bruised but not seriously injured in the collision.
"As we said in court the last time, the fear that his daughter was hurt just turned into anger," said Larry D. Combs, Berg's lawyer, after Wednesday's sentencing.

I remember this case. Tough one. The father is upset his little girlhas been knocked down, the boarder is trying to do the right thing and is checking on her and then POW. What did you guys call this? The Red Mist? Probably all he was seeing. Didn't even know what he had done until he was in handcuffs. |

Ummm, Self control is the first thing that comes to mind. Then better to have two young people hurt in the hospitol than just one, uh uh, I guess...the downfall of society... |

Self control always sounds so nice in hindsight. When its happening to you or to a member of your family... self control goes out the window. In this case another person who was probably not entirely at fault was also victimized. I've been run into three times, the last time so hard it broke my leg. If I could have gotten up,I would have strangled the guy (sorry to say it, but a drunk teen boarder who was unhurt and who couldn't have cared less). They looked for him but he was long gone by the time they had me strapped in for the ride down the mountain. My husband still fantasizes about catching that kid. |

It's a problem on the slopes and on the freeways. My sister and bro in law were creamed head-on by two "road ragers" fighting over a strip of turf. The result: my brother in law has not walked since Thanksgiving morning. In this case the CHP caught them, arrested them, and now they get to deal with our legal system. Guess what? One of the drivers was 75 and the other was 40 and had 3 kids in HER car. |

What an awful story. No one won here, did they? I understand the father's reaction but it blinded him and it appears the boarder was really a pretty nice kid. That said, I would probably react in much the same way if I saw my daughter knocked down. |

If you put your child in a situation were they can be injured (like on a ski slope)you must be an idiot. If I was there and saw a grown man repeatedly punching a young woman for something she accidentaly did and was in the midst of appologizing for I would have kicked the crap out of him. He would have gone to the E.R before jail. In fact I would kick the crap out of him if I saw him on the street today. There is no excuse for his behavior. |
