Olympic Impact: Slight? Spike? Or Just Weather?

By
February 20, 2006

Despite the crash-filled, Kwan-free, "buzzless" (Media Life Magazine) Olympics, at least one former U.S. Olympic venue saw a spike in visits during the first weekend of Torino while other resorts worked hard to ratchet up the excitement.

At Lake Placid in upstate New York, Squaw Valley, Calif. and Park City, Utah, officials put up numerous large-screen TVs for viewing and trumpeted their connections with the Games.

"We are bracing for beaucoup business at our venues. Whiteface will be very busy as will our bobsled and luge rides for the public," Sandy Caligiore of the Olympic Regional Development Authority in New York told Industry Report in advance of the big Presidents Day weekend.

He added that phones were "constantly ringing" at hotels and some were sold out, although it was clear this was due not to the faraway yawn from Torino but to the East Coast storm that powdered previously spring-like slopes.

Meanwhile, tiny Belmont, Vt., hometown of Golden Girl Hannah Teter, and Okemo, her original home hill, awaited word on when the halfpipe champ might return to the Maple Syrup State so they could fete her appropriately.

Within hours of Teter's breakthrough ride, Belmont and nearby Ludlow were "festooned with congratulatory banners and balloons," Bonnie Macpherson of Okemo told IR Park City went into what the local press called a "frenzy" after Utah native Ted Ligety won the gold medal in the Men's Combined.

"It's a career capper," Park City Ski Team coach Dave Galusha told the media. Since Ligety is a mere 21 and is the only medalist Galusha has coached, we assume he was referring to himself.
