Bad Bode Is Good For Snowsports, Torino Ink
By
January 23, 2006
By now everyone knows about the Time and Newsweek covers featuring the latest bad boy of sports, Bode Miller. Although the Olympic hopeful apologized for his remarks on "60 Minutes" about skiing while hung over, the publicity he unwittingly drummed up for the Torino games and for the sport itself was huge.
A spokesman for NBC, which will broadcast the games in next month Feburary, did not return calls. Martha Wilson, spokeswoman for Bretton Woods, told Industry Report that the resort planned "to continue to support" Miller, its director of skiing, but it is "certainly glad that he took the opportunity to set the record straight and to clarify his message.
"Bretton Woods, of course, does not condone any reckless behavior of any kind," Wilson said, and she did note that "he has put New Hampshire and the United States in the forefront of international ski competition."
Two of Miller's other sponsors, Atomic Skis and Nike, also backed him. And Marc Ganis of SportsCorp., a Chicago sports consultant, told a Boston paper that if Miller does well in Torino, the controversy might actually get him more deals, because "he's basically identified himself as a rebel, as a partier. That's the makings of a counterculture hero."
FYI, Miller is only the fourth skier to appear on the cover of Time. Previous ones: Phil Mahre and Tamara McKinney together in 1984 and Andrea Mead Lawrence in 1952. At Newsweek, Mahre, Penny Pitou, Kathy Randolph and Georgette Miller previously appeared on the cover.
