Early Season Numbers: Color Them Rosy With Question Marks
By October 03, 2005
How are destination resort bookings shaping up for the winter?
Mark Uhlfelder, senior vice president of Ski.com, reports: "We're up hugely; at least 18 percent overall" vis a vis last season "and by some measures up 57 percent, looking at advance bookings but not deposits. Some of the bookings will fall through, to be sure, but most will not."
He cites two questions that could challenge this rosy picture: Are resorts themselves indicating that reservation are up? And will Hurricanes Katrina and Rita slow bookings for Mardi Gras week (in 2006 it falls on Tues, Feb. 28), when skiers and riders come from New Orleans and elsewhere to celebrate in the mountains?
So far, says Uhlelder, his firm has not noticed any fall-off for Mardi Gras, but did see a temporary drop in bookings during the third week in September, when Houston was being evacuated in advance of Rita.
