Jackson To Seek Legislative Help To Fund New Tram

By
September 19, 2005

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort President Jerry Blann dropped the other shoe (boot?) last week when he confirmed at a New York press reception what many expected: the Wyoming resort will seek state help to fund a new tram.

Several months ago, the resort announced it was "decommissioning" the iconic 40-year-old red box at the end of the coming season "to minimize safety concerns." In New York, he said a replacement would be a $20-million investment, "but fortunately we are in a state rich in oil and gas royalties." Wyoming has a $2-billion budget surplus, he said.

Blann told The Industry Report that the resort probably would seek either "a major grant," a loan, or components of both, but whatever form the request takes, "it's going to the legislature."

He noted that the resort had already been spending up to $100,000 a year to repair aging parts when it realized it would soon come time to replace "everything but the towers."

Putting a grant package in place and getting necessary approvals will take several years, he added. In the interim, he said, Jackson is looking at surface lifts, cat skiing and other options for skiers and riders who consider the mountain's double-diamond "high testosterone" (Blann's term) runs from the top of Rendezvous Mountain, such as Corbet's Couloir, the apex - literally and figuratively - of American snow.

Why did Jackson Hole announce the "retirement" of the tram without having a plan for replacing it? "Because we thought it would take some time for people to process. We wanted to get this out there and let people chew on it a while."
