Who's Still Male, Young, Western? Snowboarders, Says SGMA
By August 22, 2005
Not that it's a revelation to anyone, but a new study by the SGMA International concludes that the majority of American snowboarders are still young, male, and from families with household incomes of $50,000 a year or less.
Using information based on its annual SuperStudy, SGMA says that 82 percent of frequent snowboarders are under the age of 25. The increasing number of women and girls riding has not changed the fact that almost 71 percent of "frequent" (15 or more times a year) riders are male. Over 38 percent of these frequent riders are between the ages of 12 and 17.
The study's statistics indicate boarders are 135 percent more likely than the general population to reside in the Mountain region of the U.S., while 41 percent of frequent riders live in the Pacific coast states of California, Washington, and Oregon.
Perhaps a bit eye-opening is the fact that fully half of frequent boarders come from households with incomes ranging between $25,000 and $49,999 a year, according to the report. Participants live in or near big population centers -- 45 percent of all riders can be found in a market with 2-million-plus people.
The study is available from SGMA International for $95.
