MSAA Holds Fire Sale

After the final festivities at the recent Midwest Ski Areas Association (MSAA) summer meeting, Executive Director Chris Stoddard may have trouble finding future sites for the get-together. At least, that was part of the joke going around after a rousing fireworks display started a grass fire on top of the little ski area Highlands of Olympia near Oconomowoc, Wisc., where the conference was held.

Attendees were enjoying the display when fire erupted on top of the 205-foot hill after a low burst. A rousing cheer went up as fire engines and police cars arrived to battle the blaze.

An employee stationed on top of the hill for just such an occurrence had already knocked down most of the fire by the time the hook-and-ladder gang reached the summit. As one attendee was heard to say, "They could have walked up faster."

None of the lift equipment, chairs or lift hut was damaged and no one was injured. Allegedly the ski area wasn't an MSAA member until this year, when the conference was held next door at the Olympia Resort and Conference Center. Members teased Stoddard that he would do anything to make sure heartland ski areas joined MSAA, including burning them down.

The meeting was a "roaring" success, according to Stoddard.
