'Tanks For The Memories' Promo Tops Off In Maine

By Mountain News Staff
July 11, 2005

Several mountain resort towns are offering their overnight visitors a free tank of gas as a way to counter high gas prices.

The Chamber of Commerce and hoteliers in Bethel, Maine, have launched a "Tanks for the Memories" promotion that offers a free fill-up (up to $20) for a stay of three nights or more (weekends included) through Oct. 15. The promotion targets Boston and other New England cities that are roughly half a tank of gas away from Bethel. The goal is to up the average stay from two nights to three.

Reservations must be made through the Bethel Area Reservation Service, which has about 50 members, including condos, hotels and B&Bs. Having a reservation service in place enabled the town to swiftly implement the promotion, according to Wende Gray, the chamber's marketing consultant.

Aspen has a similar deal - "Aspen's Got Free Gas And Deals on Wheels" promotion. Visitors who book at least two nights' lodging through Stay Aspen Snowmass receive a voucher for up to $50 free gas as well as a variety of other freebies. Big Bear Lake and Snowshoe are offering $25 vouchers with bookings.

AAA estimates that the cost of an 800-mile trip in a vehicle getting 20 miles to the gallon at the average national price of $2.15 per gallon, is about $26 more than it was two years ago when the average national price for a gallon of gas was $1.50.
