Wolf Creek Back In CSCUSA Ranks -'It Can't Hurt'

By
June 13, 2005

When Wolf Creek rejoined the trade group Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) last week after an absence of nearly a decade, it was only natural to wonder if the move was linked to the Southern Colorado family-owned ski area's legal battle with a group of Texas developers.

The developers, including Billy Joe "Red" McCombs, a former owner of the Denver Nuggets, among other sports teams, want to build a $1-billion commercial/residential village on private land right next to the rustic ski hill. Wolf Creek is trying to stop it. The two sides are now locked in dueling lawsuits.

"I don't think (joining CSCUSA) will hurt us," Wolf Creek's President Davey Pitcher told The Industry Report. But he said perhaps the powerful trade organization "can help us with the public officials, congressmen, senators. We've found the McCombs group is active politically."

Pitcher said his decision had more to do with admiration for CSCUSA's work on updating the state's Skier Safety Act and the work of CSCUSA's Chief Executive, Rob Perlman.

"They're doing a service for all ski areas," said Pitcher. "We've decided to give it a try for a year." Wolf Creek had opted out of CSCUSA because the Pitchers are not convinced "'heavy marketing'does that much good."
