Snowshoe Partners To Expand Work With Disabled

By Craig Altschul
June 27, 2005

Ground was broken last week for a new 2,800 square foot log and timber frame building at Snowshoe Mountain Resort to serve disabled persons who want to learn to ski or race through programs of the Challenged Athletes of West Virginia (CAWV). It's another example of cooperative ventures at resorts underway this summer.

Dave Begg, executive director of CAWV, the largest program of its kind in the Atlantic states, told The Industry Report that "the expanded facilities will assist us in handling a larger number of athletes during the summer and winter.

"We'll be able to house additional equipment, which also will enable us to teach more athletes." CAWV served 400 disabled children and adults (from five-year-olds to seniors) last year. Begg said he expects that total to double in the next few years.

Partners play a key role in the expansion effort. Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Sunset Timber Frame, Appalachian Log Structures, and the Conservation Corps of West Virginia have joined with CAWV to make the new facility a reality through in-kind materials and labor.

CAWV is a chapter of Disabled Sports USA, which has operations at numerous mountain resorts throughout the country, serving over 65,000 disabled persons and their families.
