Snowboarding #5 In 'Extreme' Sports
By
June 27, 2005
The 2005 Superstudy of Sports Participation, released earlier this month by SGMA International, shows snowboarding was the fifth most popular "extreme" sport in America last year, with more than 7.1-million participants.
Topping the list was inline skating, followed by skateboarding, paintball, and artificial wall climbing. The numbers, however, include people who took part in a sport as little as one time during the year. The survey noted that the average snowboarder went riding an average of 7.6 days in 2004.
The ranking represents a drop for snowboarding from fourth in 2002, as artificial wall climbing leapfrogged over snowboarding.
For mountain resorts, the survey suggests artificial walls and/or skateboard parks can be a major draw in summer. According to the survey, the average number of days of participation for a skateboarder in 2004 was 48 days. The overall participation number for skateboarding was almost 11.6-million.
