'Taos Not Flooded' Say Chamber Officials

By Craig Altschul
May 30, 2005

Chamber of Commerce officials in Taos, New Mexico, are using every method they can to get the word out to consumers and the travel industry that they are not under water. The high temperatures that have consumed the Southwest for the past week have fueled a faster than normal spring snow run-off.

The biggest worry is in Questa, 20 miles north of Taos and 20 miles south of the Colorado border. Rivers and creeks in Taos County are at or near capacity and there is still four feet of snow just above the town. All of these waterworks occurred just as the long Memorial Day weekend got underway.

Jan Mellor at the Taos Chamber is emphatic that the classic village of Taos is unaffected. "Please note," she adds to the top of her news release on the virtues of visiting the historic village, "Taos IS NOT flooded!!!"
