Be Careful What You Ask For

Those who toil each day at ski resorts learn to love winter. But, when the opportunity comes to thaw out, they relish it, too. That's why the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) has steadfastly scheduled its annual May "coming together of the clan" in warmer climes.

But, thawing out took on a new meaning when about 1,000 winter people met at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in the Arizona desert a week ago. A record-setting early heat wave brought daily temperatures that hovered at 112 degrees.

There were no snowmaking demonstrations.
